On The Road to Lhasa

by MikeySoft - last update: Oct 23, 2008

Western Sichuan

Tibet
This section's travel logs will cover my overland trip from Chengdu, Sichuan into Tibet. I took side trips within Sichuan and Yunnan. The road parts of my travels are included in this section. These parts of Sichuan and Yunnan were once part of Tibet with similar customs and scenery.

However the roads conditions are very different. They were sometime horrible in eastern Tibet. We saw new roads and tunnels under construction, so, in a few years, the drive in will be a lot better.

This trip was in late May 2006. You will see snow and ice, clouds and fog, and sunny skies.

I'm adding travel videos to my YouTube account at:
http://www.youtube.com/TravelWithMike

So far I have a narrated video of Lhasa, Tibet and a slide show of people and places around Lhasa Tibet.

I have been unable to upload the full version of my narrated video of Lhasa to VT. It explains a lot of what you see and many people find it interesting. You can see the full version on youtube, and/or the short version on VT.
Good Stuff

Winter Bug, Summer Grass

This thing is a bug in winter and grass in summer, or it is just a grass with a root which looks like a bug? Only found at high elevations. The Chinese buy this from the Tibetans at a high price.

In pin yin: dong chong xia cao
In Chinese: 冬虫夏草

I've seen the same thing on sale in Shanghai. A lot more expensive in Shanghai, maybe 20 times more.
Tibet Mountain Pass 5008 Meters!

Tibet Mountain Pass 5008 Meters, over 16400 feet!
