War Prize | Princess Wencheng and King Songtsän Gampo |
I am not a historian but my understanding is that Tibet and China had several wars with each other. Tibet once invaded China as far as present day Xi'an.
In 635 AD, the king of Tibet demanded to marry a daughter of China's emperor as a war prize. Wencheng was this war prize. She, along with the king's other wife from Nepal, are the ones that brought Buddhism to Tibet.
It is also believed that she was not a daughter of the emperor. She was the well educated daughter of a nobleman. Their marriage brought peace between Tibet and China for many years.
Her bringing Buddhism to Tibet helped her cope living in this far away country with strange foreign customs to her. |
