Avignon I traveled to Avignon for the day while I had been staying in Marseilles. I was tired as can be, trying to see as much as I could on my vacation, so I drudged on.
I took a bus ride there which dropped me off at the outskirts of a medieval gated town. There was a market going on, that I was unfortunately only able to breeze through, but not without missing the wonderful scents of olives of every kind.
My mission was to find the famous "Palace of the Popes," which was only a few blocks walk away.
There, I bought my ticket and some headphones. I listened to the lecture and walked through this historical palace practically by myself!
As I walked I was more and more amazed at where I was -- it was so awesome and romantic -- yet I was so tired I felt that I could not fully appreciate it all. I kept thinking... you will remember this place later, Marie. And of course, I do.
After the palace, I walked through the maze of streets to find the famous "Pont d'Avignon." It was extremely confusing - even with a map - the blocks wind around and around. I was happy when I finally made it there. It was a very peaceful place. The bridge was very beautiful and the river as well.
Next I made a climb up to the top of a "mountain" at the edge of the river. I was exhausted, but was very content after I reached the top. There was a wonderful park there with a small pond and grotto, various wildlife, families and romantic couples.
Although I didn't get to spend much time in Avignon, I had spent an absolutely wonderful day, which I have revisited in my memories. I only hope to go back there again someday. Right now it's just like remembering a dream. |
