Bergen, Norway's second largest city, was once a major station for the Hanseatic League, the medieval North Sea and Baltic trading alliance.
Most of the Bryggen, the city's historic dockfront, was destroyed in 1944 when a munitions ship exploded in the harbor. Only a few of the old wooden buildings remain. |

Kuznetsov_Sergey Fri Oct 13, 2006 14:48 UTC Such handwork wooden houses I used to see only in provincial russian towns... Bergen looks very similar. Thanks for sharing, Susan! | penumbra Thu Oct 5, 2006 02:15 UTC A little cottage by the lake looks like an ideal location for a composer. | Bwana_Brown Sun Aug 27, 2006 12:12 UTC Interesting tidbits on some of Bergen's history! That must have been quite a voyage all the way from the south of Norway to the north. Too bad about the WW2 explosion - same thing happened to Halifax, NS in the first World War. | arantha Mon Jun 19, 2006 01:22 UTC Thank you for your visit and the comment on my Bergen page. Geat pictures and interesting tips! :) Greetings form London :) |
