Antigua - a step back in time

by Sue08080 - last update: May 4, 2006

History

The Arch of Santa Catalina
Anitugua, the old capitol of Guatemala, is a gentle introduction to the country. It is a charming place, although in no way representative of the rest of this interesting nation. It is an excellent start to a visit here, only 45 minutes from the airport in Guatemala City. The streets are lined with restaurants, bars, hotels and shops. People are friendly and tourists abound. Take a day or two here to unwind and enjoy yourself.
La Merced

Shades of old Spain

Antigua boasts a multitude of churches in various states of repair. Each is unique and beautiful in its own way.

Pictured here is La Merced with a facade that looks like Wedgwood china. It has been beautifully restored, painted yellow and white, and filled with plaster moulding of intricate patterns. Look closely and you can find the outline of a corn cob...probably added by Mayan laborers...a tribute to the corn god?
halls of the Casa Santo Domingo

Old charm....modern luxury

A beautiful example of the charm and history of Antigua is the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo. This former convent is a combination of history and modern conveniences in a magnificent setting. It is a lush paradise, from the charming rooms, delicious food, friendly employees, to the gleaming corridors. Splurge for a stay there.
