Along Highway 1

What's that smell?????

Pie in the Sky
Ok so I'm with my friend Linda and we're heading to Wells Beach by way of every stop along Highway 1 that looked interesting. Suddenly I smell something like baked apples all cinnamony and brown sugar gooey. Stop!!!! We allmost passed it. "It" being Pie in the Skiy, a little bakery on the corner right off of the highway in Cape Neddick. Outside black eyed susans were growing like smiles laughiing in the sunshine on the side of the building right next to a vintage 7 series BMW. "Gee" Linda says, "I guess baking pies pays pretty well." Linda is a sourpuss Bostonian given to making observations like that. WELL!!!! we go inside and this little elflike woman, barely taller than the counter behind which she was standing was indeed selling pies and cookies the likes of which I have never tasted. The apple was the only pie left and it weighed 8 pounds. I kid you not. Linda plunked down $25and bought it for her mechanic who keeps her car going despite a cranky flywheel, back in Boston even though it should have died miles ago. The thing looks like it belongs to a crackhead and Linda is NOT one of those just a sourpuss as I've already mentioned. I found out that the woman who bakes these pies is a transplanted New Yorker. She used to sell the pies to department stores in the big apple. Hear that New York; your beloved pie lady is hiding out in Maine!!!! She and her husband left the big city and now happily make their home in Cape Neddick while making (I'm sure) many people happy baking night and day.
