Which Came First?

New London is a port town on the banks of the Thames River - which begs the question: Was the river called The Thames and then was New London built or vice versa?

This is yet another place that the Amtrak train passes on its way from Boston to New York and yet another one of those places that I wished I had had time to stop off at, even if only to find out whether the bartenders at The Bank St Roadhouse are as attractive as they look on the website!!
