Rotterdam is one of those places that all I ever seem to do is change trains. I've been using the Stena Line "Railsail" deal to travel to and from Amsterdam for my tobacco runs for quite a few years now and the Dutch train journey always requires changing trains at Rotterdam.

I tend to use the railsail option whenever time is not a priority and it is a journey that I enjoy, I like the timelessness of spending a whole 24 hour day to get from North Devon to the Netherlands.

I also like to stop off at places en-route, have a beer and a wander as part and parcel of that timelessness. However, every time I've been to Rotterdam and take a wander out of the station I'm greeted by construction-site boarding and towering modern glass and concrete edifices.

I am sure there must be more to Rotterdam than this and so for my next visit I'm definitely going to give myself a half day and see if I can get out of the constrction site - any pointers for a decent bar in easy walking distance would be gratefully appreciated!
