Pireaus is best known as the port of Athens but is in fact a separate city, being the 3rd largest in Greece with a population of approximately 175,000. For most visitors all they ever see of the city is the port itself or perhaps the short walk from the Metro station across the road to the dock gates but it is worth spending some time here - even if just to visit one of the excellent fish restaurants or just have a general walk around - I personally managed to combine both in the same evening - Ha!
