    • North Devon was fortunately rarely targetted by the German bombers during the 2nd World War although South Devon, and in particular Plymouth, suffered regular raids - Bob Lock (cf www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/12/a4208212.shtml), an evacuee, does recall one particular night when Exeter was bombed and standing on Bideford Bridge gazing "in awe at the glow in the sky when this city, some 40 miles away, was blitzed."

    Given Bideford's status as a working port, and its Long Bridge being an essential transport link, then obviously air raid precautions were sensible - and I assume that there IS a concrete bunker underneath the hut!
