The Black Horse: More Local Bands

The city centre's Black Horse (not to be confused with the one out by the airport) is a bit of a studenty pub, the area being a popular student residential one. Despite being part of the Greene King chain of managed houses it still has its touches of individuality especially its all-seasons beer garden and roaring open fires in the winter.

Beer prices are reasonable, the staff are usually friendly and service prompt. Most weekends (either Friday OR Saturday) they feature live local bands, with a leaning towards heavy rock, and most performances are well attended by a suitably appreciative audience.

Usually a good night out.

Address: 27 (??) Longbrook Street

As it says on the sign - Exeter

The Angel: Local Bands

The Angel, formerly the (I think, "if my memory serves me well") Queen Vic seems to be the venue for local try-out bands.

It's not really what I personally do these days, but it is a nice little pub, always a good pint of beer and a pleasant atmosphere.

I suppose it is more aimed at a younger market than an old fogie like myself but that doesn't stop me including it here as a tip.

I quite often drop in for a beer or two-ish! early evening as it is just across the road from Central Station and have sometimes caught the early parts of a gig and enjoyed.

The bands I've briefly glimpsed have all been pretty enthusiastic, and they usually have thier entourage, and the pub buzzes.

It's open all day normal pub hours Sunday to Weds and until 1am Thurs, Fri and Sat if they have a band.

If you enjoy a bit of live music, reasonably priced drinks, good cocktail selection, decent house wine, then give it a shot.

Dress Code: There doesn't seem to be a dress code but women are best advised to wear as little as possible, please! Especially about 6pm on a Monday evening!!

Address: Queen Street

Directions: Immediately opposite Exeter Central railway station.
