Here's another place I have fond memories of and VT has given me the perfect excuse to revisit - and here we are:)
Steed enjoyed putting his album on my homepage so left him to it -
experiment 5 - for his first attempt it ain't too shabby!
Ach digressing even before I've started.................John thing, please bear with me..........
Right, back to Ilchester: Ilchester is one of those sleepy little Somerset villages, which even though it has grown some in recent times, still retains its village character. Much like Widecombe it is the sort of village where everyone greets each other in the street, whether local or strangers, quick Hi, smile and nod.
This is the first time I've been back for over 6 years but nothing seems to have changed. OK the pubs have changed hands, had minor alterations to the decor, new staff - but yet they still have the same feel, as if the new people have merely taken up the reins from the old and continued down the same path.
I was only there for a couple of hours on a Tuesday afternoon but it was as if I had never been away, few beers, pleasant company, relaxed conversations - this is West Country living proper.
When I first opened this page I didn't have any content for it so put this little poem on the page, now I don't know what to do with it so might as well just leave it here - another John thing;)
No Letter (Ilchester 2/7/98)
Ben has four legs but only three feet,
loves the chef for his smell
and obeys, knows full well
where the twain of us shall meet
Dappled spaniel, the laundry room is yours -
the garden, so long as you don't dig in it, is ours,
the kitchen is mine - yours is upstairs
And the cat, neither worries nor cares
the cat, whose only name is CAT,
no formal introductions need be made,
needs no looking after and is never afraid,
unlike Ben, who challenges but only so far as that
and runs meekly when spoken to
with tones and words that he knows true.
