Let's Start Positive.......... | The Village - One Of The Better Views! |
As a location, here in S Devon, nestled in the rolling hills of the South Hams coast, I kinda looked forward to my little temp job here - and it is a pleasant, gentle part of Devon. Hmmmm: SHAME ABOUT THE VILLAGE!!!
There are so many unspoilt villages in Devon, and even those that have had their little bits added on still retain their essential character, but not here in Wembury - I am really struggling to find something nice to say about the place: it is a ludicrously incongrous housing estate just stuck there with no respect for the natural beauty of the area - just a countrified suburb of Plymouth AND I should say I actually like the suburban areas of Plymouth; the bits that are still attached to the city that is.
It's not often I have anything negative to say about anywhere in Devon but...........Wembury is HORRID! |
| | Still Trying To Be Positive................ The Church is interesting, sitting overlooking the bay, with its graveyard's tombstones carrying the names of the local notables: good old Devon names such as the Calmady's and the Courtneys, and others less well known, buried with their sea views overlooking the beach. But the car park full of cars, and the tiny grey beach itself just don't hold any appeal, well not for me anyway - ach spoilt by the wilds of the moors, spoilt by the unchangedness of say Widecombe, or Lynmouth, Clovelly and Newton, Moreton and Islington, even the cities: Exeter and Plymouth; the towns: Tavistock and Barnstaple: yes I am spoilt by so many other unspoilt parts of my adopted county.
And so poor Wembury gets a mention but not a recommendation, sorry Wembury! |
| | One Definitive Positve!! If you are into serious walking then Wembury beach is the start point for the walk from South to North Devon, taking in the 2 Moors Way, arriving (after 117 miles) at Lynmouth - a mate of mine has done this but be prepared for weathers, and allow a good week - if you plan your journey well you can find PUB B&B's for your overnight stops - maybe give it 10 days!! |
