Restaurant Name: Au Cadet de Gasconne
OK we are in Montmarte, the place is a tourist trap, even in November the artist's square is full of Japanese, Americans, the odd German, a few English, a Spanish couple on the terrace of the bar next door where I had a quick beer (or two- purely to soak up the atmosphere of course!).
Having said that: this is a good restaurant - this is the second time I've eaten here, with a 13 year gap between visits and it was exactly as I remembered it from my last visit. Sitting at my window table overlooking the square, watching the world go by with a lovely buzzy crowd of predominately French customers and a suitably mustachiod waiter to throw the cutlery on the table in inimitably Parisian fashion.
Le soliel brille, les ousaux chantais sur les arbes (OK my French is pretty naff - but you get what I mean!).
Just a nice relaxing 2 hour lunch AND I even saw the waiter smiling once - bonus or what?
A very minor flaw was the cheese being served too cold, but that I can live with, especially as I was nibbling at it for the best part of half an hour.
Favorite Dish: Has to be the snails: these have been niether tinned nor frozen, perhaps they arrive "vac-packed" but none the worse for that - absolutely delish, just the right amount of bite, niether chewy nor grainy and plenty of bread to soak up the garlic butter. Bread basket topped up without me having to ask!
Escalope de Veau "a la Normande" as a main course - great!
Fromage, as above.
Washed down with 50cl carafe of Provencal Rose and coffee and calvados to finish.
Not the cheapest restaurant in the world, but good quality, service as expected and a really relaxed atmosphere.
