Probably the most well known sight from Prague must be the astronomical clock, which is running correctly for ages The top clock displays the time and solar & lunar standpoints whereas the lower clock is more of a calendar with the Czech celebrating the saint of their day of birth. Check out my different day & night time photos for different positions Astronomical clock : Every hour the 12 apostles come out in turn while the skull (at the right of the clock) pulls the bell symbolizing death and our mortality. The other statues represent vanity and greed. It was built during the time we thought earth was at the centre of the universe, so it displays the rotation of the sun & the moon around earth.

Both the main entrance and the north entrance are guarded Even if you have seen it before (Monaco, London, Sofia, ...) it is always an entertaining sight, but poor fellas who can not move for hours and are bothered by a zillion tourists (yes us included) that pose on a photo next to them.

The Charles Bridge is by far the most well known site of Prague, connecting the mala strana and the old town. The bridge is nicely decorated with large statues , representing important persons , mostly religious and were added over the years, most of them are copies though whereas the originals are stored in the national museum. Until 1754this was actually the only bridge over the Vltava. Its construction was allowed by Charles IV in 1357 and not until 1683 was it decorated by its first statue. Day & night , from far away or on top of it this bridge looks great and is car free. Yet best to cross it as early as possible unless you wanna warm up in a touristic crowd. Do you recognize the scenes of Mission Impossible shot here?

From the castle side to the other the bridge ends up twice in style, check out the photos Both bridge towers are worth the view. The gothic tower at the old town side was built around the end of the 14th century and was used to defend the city. From the castle side you can have a look at the water mill of devil's creek (see other tip)

Named after the goldsmids working here in the 17th century, Golden Lane also housed the king Rudolf II's crossbow archers (hence the attraction in Kafka's house). However in the 19th century this lovely street was inhabited by criminals and the poor and it had to wait for the past century for a thorough clean up to its present state. Even in mid November and with an entrance the Golden Lane is overcrowded. Yet still worth a visit. In the beginning of the street you'll find the house of Kafka, well actually he just stayed a few months here with his sister, but it sells

Not only in the library and bookshops but also all around Prague will you find trailmarks of one of the biggest writer of the past century Next to one of the synagogues in the Jewish quarter a large statue of Franz was erect , depicting one of his characters. In the beginning of the Golden Lane you'll find the house of Kafka, well actually he just stayed a few months here with his sister, but it sells The house is installed like a museum, with artefacts, costumes and weapons of the middle-ages. In the back end you can even shoot some crossbow. Frans Kafka was a Czech-born German-speaking writer who only became famous posthumously with his novels expressing the alienation of 20th century man, more precisely dehumanization, bureaucratic labyrinths, and totalitarian society . Kafkaesque characters are trademarks of his writing. His health issues added other issues like fear of physical and mental collapse in his stories. Kafka admitted in Letter to His Father (1919) : "My writing was all about you; all I did there, after all, was to bemoan what I could not bemoan upon your breast. It was an intentionally long-drawn-out leave-taking from you." The Castle and The Trial ( or lack of trial as he describes so well) remain his 2 most famous novels. In 1924 Kafka died of TBC.

From a recent historical point of view this place is famous for the velvet revolution against the police violence in 1989 and Jan Palach who burnt himself out of protest against russian dependency. This square is 750 meters long and 60m wide. The National Museum in the back and the King Wenceslas statue look great on this large square, both at day & night Although it's some kind of a shame that all big shopping houses invaded this square. At night this place is full of guys luring you into one of the many cabarets In the middle of the square you can have a drink in an old metro cabin.

The old town hall is indeed spoiled with the clock, Tyn church , Nikolas church and the Jan Hus Monument Centrally located on the old town square, this monument is a memorial for Jan Hus. He preached against the corruption of the church and became a martyr for the Czech as his preaching caused his death when he was burnt alive on July 6, 1415.
