Plovdiv Plovdiv is an ancient and also the 2nd Bulgarian city with its 350000 inhabitants. It is a city upon layers of cities and an epoch upon layers of epochs, with influences from the Thracian and classical Greek, the pride of Philip of Macedon, a centre of Byzantinism, a stronghold of the Bulgarians, a dream of the crusaders leaving all in all a magnificent wealth and history.
Plovdiv is located in the Southern/Central part of Bulgaria, about 130km from Sofia and enjoys a mediterranean climate. The river Maritza runs through it and the city is build around several hills or 'tepes'.
Other than the unique and charming atmosphere when walking around the ancient village with the old Thracian ruins on top of the hill and especially the amfiteater are not to be missed. | | |
