Succulence, Sun, Spices & Shacks - GOA!

by JessH - last update: Mar 26, 2009

"Namaste! Danyavaad" for visiting my page...

Calangute beach livin'

I dig my toes into the sand.
The ocean looks like a thousand diamonds
Strewn across a blue blanket.
I lean against the wind
Pretend that I am weightless
And in this moment I am happy... happy.
I wish you were here.

My first Girlie-holiday - my first trip to India - my first vacation planned almost solely based on VT members' tips -
how can I sum up my 10 days in Goa?

> Long, clean beaches
> Beautiful sunsets
> Lush greenery
> Warm-hearted people
> The soundtrack: Goa-Trance by night, the "aaah-aaah!" of crows by day
> Fabulous Indian cuisine
> Interesting markets
> Relaxed beach-shack atmosphere
> Friendly beach & street dogs
> Strong, cheap cocktails
> Sweet, juicy fruit
... ok, it's difficult to sum up.

We chose to visit Goa at the end of October: this is the very beginning of the high season for the region. The decision was made partly because we wanted to "escape" Ramadhan in Dubai,
partly because we still wanted to maybe catch the last of some of the monsoon rains,
partly because we wanted to be gone before all the trance-rave-pot-parties began,
and partly because flights & hotel rates are still cheaper during the off-season.

Also, I'm not keen to travel to any country in the middle of high-tourist-season, which for Goa is in December & January. I'm sure the parties are fun & lively, but raves and trance-parties are simply not my scene ;-)

So have a look at my tips & private albums to get an insight about this Indian / Portuguese / Hippi destination :-)
I hope you enjoy them as much as I did whilst "researching" them!

Calangute... Baga... where?

We all know Goa is in India - OK.
We also know that it must be along the coast (duh!) as there are all of these beautiful beaches we've heard so much about - Fine.

Now... ehm... where exactly is it?

Pros:"Cheap! Relatively clean, safe and friendly"
Cons:"Traffic, clingy street vendors, still slightly undeveloped in some areas"
In A Nutshell:"The perfect place to get to know India... from its good side!"

In India medicines are sold by brand name, in West it has to be by their composition. MNC trap, docs also prescribe by name!! In Kolkata large Tiger Prawns 14pcs a kilo, sells for Rs400-500 or USD 10, in fish market. In Dubai it must be 20-25 USD.
