The Gezira Scheme was set up to utilise the fertile clay plains of the central Sudan. The British established the scheme whereby tenants were given a few feddans to cultivate cotton for the mills of Lancashire in Uk.
Gezira Scheme is supplied with water through the Main Canal fed by gravity from Sennar Dam.
It started in 1925 with 300,000 feddans, which increased to 670,000 in 1931. By the middle 1950s it had reached nearly 1 million feddans.
Most travel by road takes you through the Gezira. Tarmac road links Khartoum, Wad Medani , the main town in the Gezira, and beyond to Port Sudan, Gedaref, and Kassala.
New towns are springing up, like Giad Industrial City, and villages are expanding to form small towns. When we were young only two places we passed had buildings on both sides of the main road, now almost every village has built a mosque or shops and houses on either side. This is a hazard as people dart across the road which is frequented by articulated lorries, long -distance coaches as well as smaller vehicles.
.
From a flat dry plain with areas nearer the canal under cultivation in the dry season; to lush green fields and healthy cattle and sheep after the rains; flooded area during the rains, a journey through the Gezira area can be boring, or full of life depending on the season. people go about their daily lives regardless of the passing traffic, animals stroll across the road risking life and limb.
