The Gezira Scheme was set up to utilise the fertile clay plains of the central Sudan. The British established the scheme whereby tenants were given a few feddans to cultivate cotton for the mills of Lancashire in Uk.
Gezira Scheme is supplied with water through the Main Canal fed by gravity from Sennar Dam. It started in 1925 with 300,000 feddans, which increased to 670,000 in 1931. By the middle 1950s it had reached nearly 1 million feddans. |

Tarmac road links Khartoum, Wad Medani , the main town in the Gezira, and beyond to Port Sudan, Gedaref,and Kassala. new towns are springing up, like Giad Industrial City, and villages are expanding to form small towns. Much of the landscape is still agricultural. |
