Kaunas with nearly 400 thousand inhabitants is one of the most significant cities of Lithuania. It is not only a city of old traditions, but also a large centre of business and industry. It can also lay claim to be a city of young people with over 35,000 students studying at one of the seven universities here.
Hundreds of years of cultural heritage is preserved in the historical and architectural monuments, museums, theatres, art galleries and churches of Kaunas. In Kaunas we are proud of the importance that our people have played in contributing towards making the rich cultural, historical, and academic tapestry that is Lithuania.
Kaunas has become synonymous with its rich collection of art, artefacts, antiquities, and oddities held with its thirty plus museums and galleries. Visitors should check out the Devils Museum - the only museum in the world dedicated to all things devilish!!
Modern and traditional annual musical events play a key role in enticing visitors to Kaunas. The Pazaislis Classical Music Festival is recognised internationally and during the three months of the festival, one can hear concerts in different halls, churches, and museums around the city. For jazz lovers in particular, the annual international jazz festival "Kaunas Jazz" attracts renowned performers from around the word to a selection of large and small venues around the city.
Kaunas City Day is celebrated on the 20th of May because Kazimieras Jogailaitis renewed and expanded the privileges of the city in 1463.
The main events of Kaunas City Day take place in the streets and squares of the Old Town and City center. Annually, objects of historical value are created for this event, for example an anthology of verse about Kaunas Coti, the symbol of the festival "Kaunutis" or a coin of Taurus.
Each year the city revives in spring. Townspeople and guests crowd in folk art fairs, concerts that demonstrate both the achievement of professionals and amateur artists, and represents the artistic life of Kaunas City.
