A Guide to the Highland Games of Scotland

by ShelleyKeating - last update: Nov 24, 2007

Scotland is heartfully rich in tradition, culture and history and I love the place! I am a Highland Dancer and have travelled through Scotland to the various competitions from the prestigeous World Championships in Cowal, to the quaint wee highland games and gatherings along the banks of a river in the stunning coutryside.

After my most recent adventure in August-September 2007 i thought it my duty to provide a guide to the Highland games- Where they are, what they involve and when to see them. If you are in Scotland, try to make it to one, i will be honest with my opinions on each.

How to navigate the guide

I will describe each Highland Games in 'Things to Do'. If i spent longer in the area i will link the page that will give information on accommodation or other thngs to see.

PLEASE NOTE: this is just a guide- dates may change annually and games can be cancelled especially if they are a smaller one. If i have put a website up please have a look and find out more information.
Heelin' Coo
10 things i LOVE about Scotland:
1. The highland dancing, bagpiping and caber tossing
2. The Highlands...oooh so beautiful
3. The castles (especially Edinburgh Castle)
4. Heelin' Coo's (Highland Cow, with thier shaggy coat and horns)
5. The purple heather that covers the hills
6. The accent!
7. The richness of wildlife: seals, dolphins, golden eagles, deer
8. The lochs
9. The rich history and the Scottish Pride
10. The whiskey

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an impressive display of pipe and military bands, along with cultural displays, and HIGHLAND DANCING (the best of course), held in August (along with the Edinburgh Festival). I was fortunate to perform in the Queen's Golden Jubilee Tattoo in 2002 and will be going back in 2007.

I can teach you to appreciate the Stinging Nettle ~ making tea, soup and rope from it, without getting stung. Respect. Best wishes for 2007. What are your plans? Dancing? M
