Mt klet is the highest hill around Cesky Krumlov and is an enjoyable walk- takes about 4 hours if you arent like me and get lost. Follow the green and white stripped markers from the railway station and it will take you out of the town on a road and eventually into the forest where you keep following the green and white trail markers. It was a bit disheartening to see the amount of logging through the area. There were large pine tree grave yards all through the lower regions of Mt Klet. But toward the top it was nice and lush and you can visit the Observatory which is being upgraded and have a lovely panoramic view of the surrounding towns, hills and farmlands.

I was lucky to take this picture with my digital camera as the green and white markers are easy to follow initially but as you get into the trees more and have different trails branching off finding the right way is harder. I took two wrong turns adding about an hour on to my trek (but hey, I love walking and spend most of my time slightly lost so it was fun anyway). From the red 'you are here arrow' i followed the green trail. This sign is easily found when you are walking from the train station so have a good look before continuing on.

Off The Beaten Path: Mt Klet Observatory

This observatory is at the top of Mt Klet and for a very small cost you can climb up to the top and have a 360 degree of the beautiful surroundings. There are maps indicating the villages and mountains you are looking across to, and the views really reward your climb up there. You can see the Sumava National Park in the distance (a place i would loved to have gone walking in). There are refreshments that you can enjoy on the rocks around. It looked as though the place was being refurbished to create a more formal catering place... so by the time i get back it may have changed.

I might have just a few days in Czech next year and I'm not sure where I want to spend it yet. This looks like a great little town! |
