Wollongong is a pretty cool town just 1 1/2 hours south of Sydney. It is nestled between a long stretch of good Aussie beach (nice golden sands, but not huge surfs) and a long stretch of good Aussie bush. The two main reasons it exists as it is today is 1) the University of Wollongong- a great uni with beautiful grounds including duck ponds and streams and 2) the Port Kembla steel works which was built a long time ago and employs lots of people.
Wollongong Harbour is the only point on Australia's Eastern Coast which has two lighthouses, though one is not in use. |
| | Mt Keira There are many bush walks around Wollongong and the Illawarra district, my favourite being the Mt Keira climb. It can take between 2-4 hours, depending on how much you stop, and whether you walk the long way round, or climb vertically up the rocky front. For more bushwalking look at my Royal National Park Page. |
The Beaches There are 17 patrolled beaches along the South Coast. The nearest and dearest to me is North Beach- the sunrises are beautiful! | | |
