Burrel Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 6 photos

We went there for a church service. It was a hard 2 and a half hour drive to get there from Tirana. The country side was beautiful and there was many areas with homes and no roads for cars to get to them they had to walk out to get to the main roads and be picked up by taxi minibuses to go to the main town there. We were told this part of the country was where they sent the criminals during communist times and alot of them died there. Beautiful land but it had a sense of the old times there. The people were kind to us alot of them would stare at me and Ray because they had never seen blue eyed people and Ray is just so tall and they are for the most part thin med sized people, so we had alot of people just wanting to give us a look over. The old communist buildings are everywhere tall usally not over 5 stories and concrete. The buildings are cold very cold to your bones cold and not any central style heating, just a little gas heat of some sort and a squat toliet (just a hole in the floor in the bathroom) some didn't even have indoor toliets. The land has been stripped of it's trees and cut into tiers and replanted with olive trees. The land is scared very sad to see, and they still aren't planting any hardwood trees. I asked when was all the trees cut down, during the communist time by volunteer workers : ) and the trees were burned. The younger people believe that the people just volunteered to do the labor work in the fields, they don't even know they're history only the propaganda how sad to live here or I should say the people are just surviving you can see it all over there faces.
