I think Rome is one of the most secure capitals in the world, despite of its width and location. Don't be uselessly scared of black people or other immigrants. Real problems may come from gipsies (adults and kids as well) and immigrants from Napoli. Their usual targets are tourists' wallets or bags or mobile phones. They usually "work" on public transportation or open markets. So pay usual attention, be as careful as you would be in any other city, but don't be scared or obsessed.

Traffic: The Biggest Problem

Traffic is the biggest problem of Rome. Statistics say that there are 995 cars every 1.000 people licensed to drive. Incredible. Average speed inside the city is between 5 and 10 kilometers per hour. Peaks on meals times, on early morning and late afternoon. Despite it all, pollution isn't that big, the City Hall made a lot of laws to prevent this kind of problems.

Police promises to reach you in emergencies within 45 seconds if you are in a central area, and within 3 minutes in the suburbs. We never had big problems, killings, shooting, sexual violences... it all is very rare. Just pay attention to pickpockets. That's all!

I've been in many big metropolis around the world, and I have to say that Rome is not London but it's surely better than NYC about beggars. The existing ones, usually won't approach you (unless they are gipsies) but will just seat on the ground waiting for some offers. If you are driving a car, immigrants will try to wash your windscreens. In romantic places, some immigrants will try to sell you flowers.

In these last 10 or 15 years Rome made a lot of works around the city to make places accessible to handicapped people. For sure museums and relics areas will be accessible, sidewalks, hotels and streets are accessible too, you may just find some problems in some old shops, hotels or restaurants. You may also have soe problems on some central streets whose pavements are typically ancient (SAN PIETRINI). But you will surely find people to help you.

Proper dress: European Mentality

If you are coming from Europe you will surely be used to dress however you want, you guys know that Europeans may dress the most bizarre they can and no one would even notice you. If you come from some other continents, well, you can even go around naked, no one will say or do anything. Actually roman girls go around, expecially on summertime, half naked ahahah. And don't worry to wear bras not to "point" people with nipples, I think here in Rome bras are the less sold underwear. Men, please don't wear ridiculous stuff, or they may laugh at you! On beaches, topless is very very common and there are many nudist beaches.

Like in ever other train stations in the world, just pay a little bit more attention than usual, expecially when it's dark. But just feel safe and don't be obsessed.

eileencat1 Wed May 16, 2007 02:17 UTC Wonderful Roma page! I love the Pellacchia bar on Via Cola di Rienzo for their ice cream too! Each time I am in Roma I make sure I go there at least two times! |
