Beach Life in Koh Samui

by sacrebleu - last update: Jan 18, 2006

2nd Time in Samui

This was my second time in Samui. I was so excited cos' it's a week long beach holiday since too long ago but I was disappointed about hearing how bad the weather had been since October. Luckily we were blessed with sunny weather with occasional showers only.

The day of departure finally arrived and the flight was delayed for an hour and a half which was more time before I could set my foot on the beach! Emirates claimed it was because the flight was delayed to arrive from Dubai which sounded quite typical to me.
Hong Kong Airport

A Top Class Airport in the World

Luckily even though our flight was departing at 1am, the restaurants within the airport were still opened. A bit expensive but the one and only Burger King in Hong Kong where you can have a massive double whopper can also be found there. So here's a tip for those passing the Hong Kong Airport.

If you are not hungry but tired, there are resting areas within the terminals. Really comfy reclining chairs facing the airport runway, not sure where you can get a blanket though!

About Samui

It was long time ago when I went to Samui last plus I hadn't stayed that long. So when I first arrived and realized everything was at least doubly expensive than Bangkok, I felt resentful to the island. Everyone seemed to think about money all the time and they were less friendly. Later we were told by a taxi driver with his broken English that the island was more expensive because they relied on shipment of supplies from Bangkok which is understandable. Also, a resided 'farang' told us that the local Government tried to get rid of the backpackers and wanted to promote Samui as a high-end holiday destination hence they had got rid of all the cheap bungalows. Still it's a reasonably cheap and cheerful place to travel.

However, you do need to be careful with the Islamic Thais residing there. From my experience with one taxi driver who's wife was dressed religiously. We got into a row with the unclear 'bus' fare, the guy actually wanted to attack me so just don't mess about when you are not in your country!

Pros:"Still cheap, beaches, nature"
Cons:"Some people, more expensive than Bangkok, not very safe"
In A Nutshell:"You have to be there at least once!"
