Being a city girl

by sacrebleu - last update: Jan 10, 2006

Born and Bred in Hong Kong

Victoria Harbour
7 million people living in a city 1/10 the size of London. What's the charm about this place? I know many had left HK and have come back to live. This is a city of love and hate.

A city has so much to offer and can be overwhelming at the same time - like seeing starbucks everywhere and is still expanding. We have the busiest and most densely populated place (Mongkok) in the world but at the same time, you can find the tranquil beach and mountain half an hour away from the city (The Heart Sutra in Lantau). This is a city of convenience and shops/restaurants open 7/24.

The more I travel the more I love HK. I am happy that I live here cos' I am a foodie (same as the other 7 millions living here). Some people can only taste one cuisine in their whole life but I have tasted the world of cuisine in one small place. At the same time, it broadens my mind to explore other cultures.

I know some people hate this city and still living here just for the money. I must say It is a very competitive city and people crave for money and are materialistic (perhaps including myself in a minor scale).

The most beautiful thing about HK? I think it's standing on top of the car-park in Harbour City on Tsim Sha Tsui overlooking HK Island.

I am very sad cos' our harbour is shrinking and I know one day before long it will be disappeared so come quickly and have a romantic ferry ride at night with your loved ones!

I travel hence I work

I have travelled SEA and Europe extensively and my dream destinations include Li Zhiang in China and Morrocco. Funnily enough, I am not that eager to see America but some people told me that I would love New York. It will be a long way to go there from HK though. Through travelling, I have found my true self by talking to the locals and understanding their culture.

My job doesn't require me to travel but I do try to get out as much as I am allowed. Apart from travelling, I am a big music lover and it really is a shame that we don't have many good international gigs in HK. I don't really have a favourite band in particular but I like indie music, acid jazz, hip hop/rap etc. My favourite DJs are Stephane Pompougnac from Paris and Gilles Peterson from London. My current favourite bands include The Magic Numbers, Franz Ferdinand, Blur and Interpol.
