Donji Milanovac is town of strange destiny – to move from place to place rather than settling down in one location.
In 1691 whole settlement called Banja moved to Danube island Porec, place that had kept inhabitants out of reach of Turkish army.
In 1832 setlement moved back to mainland, by Porec river intake to Danube. New formed town was the first in Serbia to be built by plans, work of Stefan Stefanovic Tenka, prince of Porec Region, and, later, President of Serbian Government. Name Porec was changed to Milanovac in honour of Prince
Milan Obrenovic, the eldest son of Prince
Milos Obrenovic. Donji (lower) had been added to make differance to Gornji (upper) Milanovac, town established at that time.
Final moving to another place occured in 1971. Donji Milanovac was moved 3 km up the river due to building of
hydroelectric power plant "Djerdap I" and rising of Danube level caused by that. Only two historical buildings were moved and preserved – the house of the Danube captain Misa Anastasijevic and the house of Stefan Stefanovic Tenka.
Nowadays, Donji Milanovac, settled in the middle of
Djerdap National Park, is great tourist destination, especially for those who enjoy beauties of nature.
