Topola is town in central region of Serbia – Sumadija. It was established by
Karadjordje Petrovic, leader of the
First Serbian Uprising around 1781. Between 1805 and 1813,
Karadjordjev grad – Karadjordje's fortified town was built. Karadjordje himself took part in the construction carrying the building material together with the builders. Today only parts of the wall, Crkva Presvete Bogorodice – the Church of Holy Mother of God, Karadjordjev konak – the residence (literally translated – the inn), now Museum of the Uprising, and the old school, now the library, are saved.
As almost everything in Topola was closely connected with Karadjordje and his descendants, the town itself had become kind of symbol of
House of Karadjordjevic. This connection became especially strong when, in first half of 20th century, magnificent endowment of
King Peter I Karadjordjevic – Church of St George – Karadjordjevic Royal Mausoleum had been built on the hill of Oplenac, above Topola.
Today, Karadjordje's Town is very important historical monument and the place where the existence of modern Serbia started, and Oplenac endowment of King Petar I is one of the Serbia greatest treasures.
