The capital of Hungary, exists in a form of Budapest since 1872, when the three independent cities of Buda, Pest, and Obuda (Old Buda) were merged into a single metropolis.
The area of Budapest has been inhabited for thousands of years, from the 3rd century BC by Celts, later by Romans, Huns, Eastern Goths, Longobards, Avars, Slavs, and from late 9th century – by Hungarians. In 13th, 14th and 15th century Buda was royal seat and capital of Kingdom of Hungary, in 16th – part of Ottoman Empire, as invaded by Turks, and since 17th until early years of 20th century part of
Habsburg Monarchy and
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which dissappeared after WWI, making space for many new independent states (Hungary;
Czechoslovakia;
Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes…). In the WWII Budapest suffered enormous destruction and lost quite of its historical heritage. The years that followed had been marked by communist – Soviet supported leadership. In late 20th and 21st century, after the period of communist terror, Budapest renew its beauty – it is now a glittering city, offering quite a lot to many tourists.
:.When traveling from Serbia, Budapest is, in many cases, a kind of "first stop", and rarely final destination. There is Serbian proverb saying "can't see the tree because of the forest", and it seems that Budapest is such "tree" for the most of Serbian travelers. Anyway, we have tried to "pick" some of its "fruit" and show it here.
