The Stinking Rose: A fun spot for dinner

Don't let the name put you off. This place was recommended by the concierge at the Marriott. Located just north of China Town The Stinking Rose serves everything made with garlic. A funky atmosphere with curtained off booths and casual, spunky servers I enjoyed the place a lot.

Be sure to get the Bagna Calda, which is oven roasted cloves of garlic in hot live oil and butter. Great for spreading on the focaccia bread.

Lots of salads, pasta, seafood, ribs, steaks all served with garlic mashed potates.

A small but decent wine list and beer on tap.

Favorite Dish: I had the Bagna Calda and Focaccia Bread, Garlic Encrusted Baby Back Ribs with Garlic mashed potates and loved it. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale took the heat off just fine.

New Woey Loy Goey Restaurant: The Real Deal

We wandered around Chinatown until we found a restaurant with no tourists only local residents of Chinatown. Also no over the top Chinese dragons, etc., just plain white walls. We weren't disappointed. Great food at a reasonable price.

Favorite Dish: There were six of us and we shared each dish. Started with hot & sour soup and egg rolls, the shrimp egg foo young (excellent!), tung lok special chop suey, Peking duck and mongolian beef. A great meal!

Alioto Fish Company: Surf and Turf with a View

Right on the water in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf.
I remembered coming here 30 years ago (vaguely). You expect someone from The Godfather to come take you order - that's how Sicilian the place feels.
Great beef and seafood spot with wonderful views of the sunset, Golden Gate Bridge and the bay. Full bar and decent wine list. Comfortable and roomy booths that could seat 6 easily.

Favorite Dish: Being from Alaska and spoiled with real fresh seafood, I stuck with the NY Steak, baked potatoe and salad. Enjoyed it and the view of the sunset.

I've never been to SF yet but I know I'm going to love this city! It's funny you mentioned the Sicilian place. Oh, I envy you being spoiled with real fresh seafood :)

Those restaurants sound great! I too really enjoyed my time in San Francisco a few years ago - it immediately became one of my favourite American cities!
