San Diego - Best of Both Worlds

by RickinDutch - last update: Jul 12, 2007

Room with a View

Room view at the Marriott
These tips are a compilation of three visits over the course of 5 years. One a business trip with 5 days at the Marriott downtown, one a business trip with 4 days at La Jolla, and most recently two weeks of family vacation.

I spent a lot of time here in my youth - San Diego State was a great party school (I vaguely recall)

I think this photo captures some of the feel of San Diego, tho. And why I wanted so bad to skip the conference and rent a sail boat (but didn't).

This was the view from my room at the Marriott. A great hotel in a great location. On the marina and next to the convention center, the Gas Lamp District. Walking distance from the huge carrier Enterprise that has been converted into a floating museum. Was closed when I walked by it one night but could see that it was chock full of vintage and modern aircraft.

I did notice that downtown has cleaned itself up a lot and felt much safer with a lot of great places to eat and enjoy oneself. The Gas Light District was kind of the Navy's red light district in the San Diego I remembered but now is filled with upscale night clubs and restaurants. Even a large mall with a Nordstroms. Big changes.
Solana Beach

Just back from another visit

Spent two weeks in Solana Beach in June of 2007. Solana Beach is just 20 minutes north of San Diego, so very central but also nice a peaceful. We would visit an attraction one day and rest for a day or two before seeing another. In this way we were able to spend a day at The San Diego Zoo, The Wild Animal Park, Leggo Land and Sea World and still feel relatively fresh and relaxed.

If you are planning a trip to the area, keep in mind that San Diego County has a great commuter train system, called the Coaster, that connects all the beach communities from Oceanside to downtown. It is cheap and fast and saves you from a lot of tense driving. It runs north and south about every 30 minutes during peak traffic and less often in the middle of the day. Last train leave downtown around 8PM unless the Padres are playing.

A nice little page on your San Diego experiences! I too had a meeting there a few years ago and really enjoyed the city. The thing I most enjoyed was wandering around the Hotel del Coronado, but your view of one of its rooms really blew my mind!

When we visited LA we intended to go to San Diego as well. We were sorry that we were not able to (due to a timetable and making choices on visiting other spots). At least missed out on your amazing view out of the hotel :-)

Rick, I've stayed there too, and agree with your assessment. Great place with marina just outside where 'boat guys' can have a ball eyeing all the megayachts. Doug d(^_^)b
