Before moving to Chicago to go to university I had lived in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor for almost 10 years, and loved it. It is definately a remote place, 800 miles south west of Anchorage in the Aleutian Islands, but there is so much to discover here. The scenery is breathtaking, the people are refreshingly real and down to earth (for the most part), and if you like the outdoors there are endless possiblities (great backpacking, kyacking, fishing, and birding to name a few).
There is also an amazing amount of history held in such a small place. The Unangan people have lived in Unalaska for thousands of years, the Russians left a strong history here in the 1700's and 1800's, and the island was turned into a military base during WWII. Dutch Harbor is also the #1 fishing port in the U.S., which adds another dynamic to a diverse little town.
- Pros:breathtaking scenery, down to earth people, and fabulous outdoor activity
- Cons:A little hard to get to and a lot of rain
- In a nutshell:A truly unique place
