Built in 1611, the Southern Church was the first church commissioned by the Protestant community. The church is wonderfully preserved and is featured prominently in paintings (e.g. by Claude Monet).

Completed in 1655, the Royal Palace was originally built to serve as Amsterdam’s town hall. Now the site of official royal functions, this is one of three palaces placed at the Queen’s disposal.

The Mint Tower makes an excellent reference point. If you followed the pedestrian shopping street, Kalverstraat, down from the central station, the tower stands where the street opens up for vehicle traffic. This is also where the Amstel river and the Singel canal meet. An finally, this is the start of Vijzelstraat which leads to the museum district. The tower was once part of the city walls and dates from 1672. The tower gets it name from the guardhouse next door where coins were minted.

Along the Singel canal near the Mint Tower is an open air flower market. Not just for tulips, the market offers an assortment of Dutch souvenirs.

Built in 1488, the gatehouse was part of the original city walls. Later it became a weighing house and nowadays a restaurant. For me, the gatehouse was always as pleasant sight to see because it meant that I had safely exited the Red Light district.

On some of the canals, you’ll notice that there is an abundance of houseboats. I don’t know if it is still the case, but apparently this was a way to avoid taxation. No land no taxes. It’s only surprising that there aren’t more boats.
