Isola d' Ischia Travel Guide: 50 reviews and 75 photos

Ischia, Italy

This island of approximately 50,000 inhabitants is located in the Bay of Naples and is one of three islands. The other two are Capri and Procida. Most tourists head for Capri, but I actually like Ischia better. Of the three islands, Ischia is the largest at 47 square kilometers and is about 33 kilometers from Napoli. The island is composed of 6 communes which are Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano. Of the 6 communes, I like Barano the best, with Maronti Beach. I have spent at least one week here every summer since 2000 and find myself always returning. There are plenty of hotels, hostels, and B&Bs, but be sure to book in advance if you plan to go during the month of August.

Castello Aragonese

If you are one of those people who don't like the beach, there is still plenty for you to see and do on this island. For starters, you can visit the Castello Aragonese! The first recorded fortress was built here in 474 B.C. and belonged to the Greek, Gerone of Syracuse. Another idea is to climb Mount Epomeo, 788 meters, which is located in the center of the island. The view is absolutely gorgeous! I never exercise, so I was actually surprised that I was able to make it to the top of Epomeo. Be sure to have good walking shoes and take some water. Walking sticks are available at the base of the mount outside the giftshop and can be borrowed for the climb. Be sure to take one! You will need it later.

The best way to travel around the island...

"Vespe truccate,
anni '60,
girano in centro sfiorando i 90,
