I Could Live Here

Far removed from the stacked, crowded nature of Downtown Seattle, Bremerton sits in a harbor off the Puget Sound just an hour ferry ride from the city.
For much of its life, Bremerton has been centered around the naval shipyard in its Downtown. Most of the large streets lead right to it, and, driving around the city, you almost feel compelled by that fact to head towards it.
It's an interesting city, caught in the ongoing culture clash between the old and new in Washington State. What was once a run-down Downtown area, has been revitalized, but at the expense of increased housing prices and an influx of commuting urbanites. Several condos have gone or are going up along the harbor in the Downtown, as close as possible to the ferry landing.
The only hotel truly Downtown is the Hampton Inn and, if you can afford it, it is very worth staying at. One way to justify the cost (usually around $100/night) is to think how you can be removed from the issues and costs of staying in Downtown Seattle, but still be able to step on the ferry and step off an hour later right by the city's restaurants and tourist attractions. I loved it, and I really enjoy Bremerton and will continue to come back.
Events are common at the ferry landing, such as the Blackberry Festival around Labor Day (a wonderful time to visit Washington), and several restaurants and shops are there as well.
