I had driven through Socorro before, but had never really stopped until I came here to stay a night before heading to the Trinity Site on October 1. Although the military convoy begins in Alamogordo, Socorro is actually over 30 miles closer to the site and has plenty of hotel rooms when this event occurs. I was GREATLY impressed with Socorro though. The older, central part looks like much of New Mexico: old adobe-style buildings and houses surrounding a grassy, shaded plaza where people laze around and little boys sell newspapers on the weekends. The rest of Socorro, particularly closer to the school, looks much more the South, with grassy lawns and ranch style houses where people talk to each other while driving by and go walking in the cool morning during the summer (I saw all of this in the just two or so hours I drove around town). Then there's the school, which, I found out, is actually very prestigous and regarded as one of the best in the country for mining and nuclear engineering. And, it's a gorgeous campus, worth a little time just to walk around exploring. Being close to the river (you can see it from most of town), Socorro is relatively humid, and gets a little unbearable in the summer when temps get into the triple digits. |
