Las Cruces | Pecan tree-lined highway south of Las Cruces |
Las Cruces is the second largest city in New Mexico (and you thought it was Santa Fe!). Much of the town is rather uneventful and looks like any small city in the Sun Belt with its mall, big box stores, chain restaurants and strings of cookie-cutter subdivisions. But this is New Mexico! Las Cruces has a lot more to offer than this, but really is a great base to use to get to other nearby places because of its services and cheap hotels. White Sands is only about 30 minutes away, Silver City is about an hour away, Carlsbad Caverns is about 2 hours away, El Paso/Juarez is about 30 minutes away. The highlight of Las Cruces for many is Mesilla, which could be compared to Old Town San Diego or Old Town Albuquerque. |
