This is a nice Irish bar in the Cooper-Young district in midtown Memphis. It's really nice being able to sit out on the patio when the weather allows it. You can even catch Rusty Lemon playing here on Wednesday nights.
Address: Cooper Ave. & Young Ave.
Theme: Eating and Drinking
This is a great place to go hear some local bands play. I prefer Tuesday nights when you can go see Rusty Lemon play. They do some great covers and have some excellent original songs as well. You can hear covers from Pearl Jam, Weezer, Incubus, Pink Floyd, 311, Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead, Coldplay, etc. The band typically starts playing around 10:30pm on Tuesday nights, but it gets pretty crowded. I would recommend getting there early enough to get a table, at least by 10:00. There is no cover during the week, but if you go on the weekend there typically is.
Address: Madison Ave.

Dancing at Rayford's
The music at this club is great, but you may not like the environment very much. I think it used to be a strip club, so there are stripper poles on the stage. They also play this horrible siren sound every now & then that is just annoying. The only drinks they sell there are 40 ounce beers. It's not a very big club, so it can get pretty crowded quickly. I know it was recently shut down temporarily because they were caught selling drugs in there. I never noticed this the few times I was there, but they're back in business now from what I understand. It's very smokey not only from the smokers, but also they have those smoke/fog machines going in there. The music they play is hip-hop, which is my favorite to dance to.
It's not far from Beale Street. Just about anyone on Beale Street ought to be able to tell you how to get there. It's just a bit of a walk through a bad neighborhood. When I took some friends that were from out of town, one of my local friends made the comment about the song "Walking in Memphis." He said, "If you're walking 10 feet off of Beale you're in a bad neighborhood." That's pretty accurate.
Directions: It's not exactly in the best part of town, but it's not far off Beale. Just be careful on your walk over there. I believe it's at the corner of Vance and 3rd.

RP Tracks
This bar is not far from the University of Memphis campus. You'll find a lot of the college kids come here to hang out, drink, & get a bite to eat. If you're looking for something to drink they have a great drink menu. If they don't give you one, ask for the shooter menu. It's extremely long & impossible to try them all. They have a great deal on shots when a train goes by, so make sure you order some during that time. They're right by the tracks...hence the name.
Address: 3547 Walker Ave.
Directions: Near the UofM Campus on Walker Ave near Highland.

Dan McGuinness Irish Pub, Memphis
This place is run by real Irish people in Memphis. We've always enjoyed going to this place. The environment is great, the food is pretty good, and sometimes you can even find some live music here. My friends especially loved this place the first time we went. They were telling me about how they would bring out a cigarette & someone who worked there would stop by & offer them a light before they could even get their lighters out.
Directions: Dan McGuinness Irish Pub is located inside Peabody Place in downtown Memphis.

My friends hanging out at the Flying Saucer
At the Flying Saucer you can find many many different kinds of beer. They are said to have hundreds of different kinds of beer. If you go on the weekends you are likely to find live music here, and when there is a band there is a cover charge. I don't think it's anything more than about $5. When it starts warming up outside they will open the windows and you can watch people as they walk by heading to Beale Street. There are some couches you can sit on here, but if they are taken you can just head into the next room where the bar is & sit down at a table or at the bar. There are also several pool tables.
Address: 130 Peabody Place
Directions: The Flying Saucer isn't actually inside Peabody Place, but just next to it. It's on the street Peabody Place.

My friend sitting by the fountain at Silky's
I've only been to Silky O' Sullivan's a couple of times, but it's a great place to hang out when it's warm outside. I prefer to sit on the patio near the fountain, drink, and chat with my friends. I know there's a goat there somewhere, but I have never seen it myself. Although, I've never looked for it either.
If you're interested in drinking a lot, I know they sell drinks you can buy in a bucket & take with you. It will almost definitely take more than one person to finish these drinks!

Live music at BB King's
If you're looking to hear some great Blues music in Memphis, BB King's is the place to go. Again, you will always find live music here and plenty of people dancing & having a good time. It may be hard to find a place to sit if you just want to watch the band playing, but if you hang around long enough someone will get up & move on to another bar. There is an indoor balcony here if you want to head upstairs & try finding a place to watch the band, but you may just have to sit at the bar.
You know you've come at a good time if you're there when Ruby Wilson is playing. She is very entertaining, has a wonderful voice, and puts on a great show!
Dress Code: Everything on Beale Street pretty much follows the same dress code. Just dress as you would for any bar or club. You know what they expect.

A band playing at Alfred's
I love going to Alfred's. It's probably my favorite spot on Beale Street. You will always find some great live music. More often than not you will find Kevin Page & the Amazing Flea Circus playing at Alfred's on the weekends. It's also great if you like to dance. There are always people out on the dance floor. If you want a more laid back environment, you can head out to the porch or upstairs on the balcony and watch people out on Beale St.
As many times as I've been to Alfred's, I don't have a picture of Kevin Page & the Amazing Flea Circus. I'm not exactly sure which band this is playing in the picture, but I remember they were playing '80s music.
Dress Code: Dress as you would for any bar or club. Nothing special about the dress code here.
