We had one day that we could not do anything. It turns out that there had been transportation strikes planned for that day, and that caused the entire public transportation to be down. This also meant that since many people were unable to get to work, most businesses including museums were closed. This was very unfortunate for us because we had really wanted to go to the Musée d'Orsay & the Rodin Museum. This not only affected the buses & metros, but also the flights taking off that day. We ended up finding out that the airline we had booked to get to Rome no longer existed, so we were forced to book a flight that day which cost us 600 euros a piece! Then we also had to pay for a taxi to get to the airport, which set us back about $60. The French love their strikes for some reason, so try to find out when they're planning them for since it seems to be common knowledge to everyone else. I think I even saw in a French newspaper once a calendar of planned strikes. Try not to let it affect your travel plans. It can really leave you with a bad taste in your mouth about a particular place...especially Paris.

They are seriously everywhere in Paris, but especially in & around the metro. Keep your hands on your things. My Dad was warned of this & decided to move his wallet from his back pocket to his front pocket. We were on an escalator leaving the metro & a man pretended to trip in front of him. At some point someone else came up to us to let us know my Dad's wallet was on the ground. They managed to get his wallet anyway. He didn't even know it happened, and he's a big guy, too. I was surprised that they decided to mess with such a big guy, but luckily in our case they only took his cash. If they hadn't told us what they did with his wallet we could've had many other problems as well. Pickpocketers have many tricks that they will pull, so try to avoid talking to people that are deterring your attention away from your belongings. Many times they act together. We were set up to go a particular direction by one guy when another guy took my Dad's wallet. Just know that if someone bends down in front of you, or acts like they're trying to brush something off your clothes, they may be trying to take something from you.

rwlittle Sat Mar 12, 2005 02:22 UTC Our last trip to France was similarly affected by the strikes. We missed our connection out of CDG, so the airline put us up in a hotel at the airport, and because of the strike we couldn't go into Paris to see anything! M was very disappointed... | Henkster Fri Jan 23, 2004 15:32 UTC Yeah, not everyone has to LOVE Paris. It is great to see the sites but sometimes it just gets totally overhyped. | thelittlevoice Mon Jan 12, 2004 13:32 UTC very informative page. i'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way about paris!!! |
