In Richmond at night you have to be very careful, because certain areas of downtown Richmond tend to be very unsafe. Unfortunately Virginia's capital has the 4th highest murder rate in the country, so that only emphasizes the point of being careful. Neighborhoods to watch out for include the Jackson Ward area, Gilpin Court, and other parts of the east part of the City. The heart of dowtown Richmond near Cary and Shockoe Bottom are pretty safe at night, and are pretty well lit. Overall, however I would warn any foreigner to be mindful of where they are, and who approches them. Stay in well lit areas, and go out with a group of people rather than alone.

When you dine in Richmond make sure you bring a few extra bucks for the dreaded meals tax. Richmond is the only place in the metro area which includes Henrico, Hanover, and Chesterfield that has a meals tax. Luckily the darn thing failed in Mechanicsville thanks to the effort of people like B1Bob and myself. B1Bob even told one of our local politicians who was supporting the tax to shove it. It was hilarious. Anyways, the meals tax is usually a few bucks. For example at Buzz and Ned's the total bill was $20 dollars, 2 of which was from the meals tax, and that doesn't include the regular sales tax.
