President Davis lived here - Richmond

President Davis lived here

Museum of the Confederacy Museum of the Confederacy Review

Not many people know or accept this, but Richmond was at one time a national capital. The Confederate States of America was a sovereign country from 1861-1865. The capital was Richmond, Virginia for a majority of that time. The Confederacy printed its own money, had its own president (Jefferson Davis of Mississippi), and its own government. The museum covers three floors in a modern (1970s) building showing Confederate uniforms, the national and battle flags, and even how Confederate hospitals tried to save as many lives as possible during the War Between the States. That was impressive enough, but the Museum of the Confederacy did a great job preserving the residence of President Jefferson Davis. The Museum tour costs $4 by itself and just the White House of the Confederacy is $7, but buy the $10 ticket for both. Nat "b1bob", David Karner "Karnubawax", and I did that in September, 2005. Nat has taken so many people the guide remembered him!

Jefferson's Brainchild - Richmond
Jefferson's Brainchild Capitol Square Review

The Capitol of VA is one of the 3 most gorgeous capitol's in the country. It runs a close second with South Carolina's Capitol. The VA Capitol square has a rich history dating back to the 1700's. It's entrance has a collection of statues with George Washington towering over 5 other VA founding fathers. The square is a perfect place to have a picnic lunch on a cool spring day. The Capitol is under current renonvation for the 400th Anniversary for Jamestown, which I encourage everyone who reads this to visit in 2007. The Capitol will have a underground vistor's center, a restaurant, and some office space. This will be under the grounds in front of the capitol. A walk around Capitol square will also reveal a tribute to Virginia's most powerful Governor Harry Byrd, and the Governor's Mansion, which is a modern architectural beauty, and is considered one of the more lavish governor's quarters in the country. This is a must see if you visit Richmond. One visit here will blow your mind, and leave you with a real sense of why Richmond is so important to the country.

The Real Beauty of Richmond - Richmond
The Real Beauty of Richmond Canal Walk Review

The Canal Walk to me is such a beautiful part of Richmond. I have taken my girlfriend Jessi there a few times and B1Bob and Karnubawax when David came to Richmond for a few days. The canal walk is a real tribute to Richmond and many describe it as our "St. Louis Arch" You start off down at Shockoe Slip and work your way up toward Brown's Island where frequent outdoor concerts are held. The canal walk has a ferry which will ride you the distance of the canal and will give you a good oppurtunity to few all of the canal. As you approah Brown's island you have the historic Tredegar Iron Works and amazing fews of the James River. When David Carner was here he told me that "he had never seen this is the brouchures about Richmond, yet it was the most amazing part of Richmond" From the Canal Walk you can see the rapids of the James, and from the old bridge pillars you can see down the entire James. From the pedestrian suspension bridge, under the Robert E Lee Bridge you can see a gorgeous shot of the entire canal.

Captivating view of the city from the memorial - Richmond

Captivating view of the city from the memorial

Paying tribute to Virginia's veterans Virginia War Memorial Review

The Virginia War Memorial is a must do if you find yourself in Virginia for a weekend. I really enjoyed my trip there with B1Bob. The memorial pays tribute to those by county who lost their lives in the 1st and 2nd World Wars, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. The names are displayed in clear glass with the view of the city traspiring through the glass. It is just a beautiful view of the city and a unique one because it is by these men's sacrifice that, Richmond and other cities within the United States are still here. For me it was an emotional experience becuase it reminded me of both of my grandfathers who served the U.S. The statues there are well done, and I love the architecture of the memorial. There is a small running fountain in the memorial and there is a place to put flowers for those of your loved ones. Overall I really enjoyed the experience and I walked away with a greater appreciation for those sacrifices which make us free today.

Fast Track - Richmond
Fast Track

Fast Track is a one of a kind place to go in Richmond. I have not found anywhere else like it. At Fast Track you go in and rent a minature race car, or drag car and race it on a very large track built inside the building. It is really neat to watch the cars go around the track and try and beat the other participants. The experience is pretty entertaining because the cars will wreck into each other and spin out like real race cars. You can race on an oval track, or race drag style with a long run way. People actually build their own cars and bring them here to race them, however you don't have to have your own car. They will lend cars out for a certain price. The last time I went the price was 7 dollars to rent the car for 30 minutes. It is a real fun thing to do, and a very unique thing to do if you find yourself board with the usual bowling or seeing a movie.
