Castel Sant'Angelo: Visit the Castel S. Angelo

  • Visit the Castel S. Angelo, on the Tiber close to the Vatican. Here is my ticket to enter the Castel...beautiful, isn't it? As you can see, it cost L.8000 when I was there in 1997. That's around 4USD.
The Pope retreated to this building when marauders descended on the city. The museum follows the history of the building that was built originally as Hadrians Mausoleum. And the beautiful bridge in front of the Castello was designed by Hadrian.

Things To Do: Walk, Walk, and Walk Some More

  • I think the best thing to do in Rome is to get a good map (MapEasy's Guidemaps are great), and walk as much as possible. Go into the little shops, restaurants, and churches. And be sure to stop into one of the gelaterias at least once--you won't believe the variety of flavors!
Walking just makes it more interesting, I think, and with a good map you shouldn't get lost. This is a medieval home in the Jewish Ghetto area. The photo was taken at dusk and the house is very grimy from dirt and soot over hundreds of years, so it's a little dark, but so interesting...people are still living there!! See AndreasK's page: http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/22fd9/ --to see this same house in a painting by Ettore Roesler Franz (it's the second one down on the page).

Isola Tiberina: And while you're walking...

  • River Tiber & Isola Tibertina

  • ..You will see scenes like this, of the Tiber River and the Isola Tiburina, where you will see what is now a hospital and also the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo.

This photo was taken from one of the footbridges over the Tiber, the Ponte Fabricio (built in 62 BC), and shows in the background the remains of the Aemilian Bridge--just one arch. The rest of that bridge was swept away many times by the currents of the Tiber, and by man. This crossing point over the Tiber was rebuilt many times. The water at this point builds up such a strong current that the bridge was never able to stand up against it.

If you continue over the Ponte Fabricio onto the Isola Tibertina and then onto the Ponte Cestio, you will end up in Trastevere---a MUST SEE while in Rome!

  • Naturally, you must see the Colosseum, and the Arch of Constantine, which is right next to the Colosseum. They are both quite impressive.
The picture says it better than I can!

Villa Borghese: Art in the Borghese

  • Another must-see is the Borghese Gallery. If you have the chance to see it, it is wonderful. The sculptures and paintings are gorgeous--bellissimo! This is the exterior of the building, which had just re-opened about a month before our visit to Rome, after 14 years of restoration!
It's just beautiful and you won't believe the sculptures, the marble looks as though it would 'give' if you touch it.

Directions: It's in the Borghese park, northeast of the Spanish Steps. An easy walk from there.

  • For an even more enjoyable and interesting day (or two or three!) book a tour with Sergio Caggia of Rome Made to Measure. Sergio is a friend of mine and a native of Rome who conducts tours of Rome's finest sights as well as the lesser known places that lots of travellers don't know about, and he's been doing this since 1997. He does a fantastic job and will design your tour according to what interests you. His website is below....

Yeah, I know I'm advertising, but he doesn't know I'm recommending him, and this is very helpful for those who don't want to do a "package tour", but who aren't certain about where to go and what to see.
