Very expensive, but terrific location...right across the street from the Forum and you can sit outside on the rooftop patio with a view of the Forum and Monument Victor Emanuele while you dine.

    Favorite Dish: Lunch buffet--fabulous!

The absolute BEST thing to do...

  • The absolute BEST thing to do in Rome is to wander around, listen for clinking of dishes, and peek into windows to find small trattorias/osterias on little side streets, filled with locals. These are the BEST places to eat. Don't worry about communicating, you'll be able to get something terrific to eat even if you can't speak much Italian--try pointing (politely) to someone else's meal if it looks good, smile a lot, and order vino bianco or rosso!!

    Favorite Dish: Pasta, naturalmente!!

d'Archetto Pizzeria...near the Trevi Fountain. This is me outside after a meal one night. We ate there twice and had no complaints.
It's a fun, busy, comfortable place for a meal. Try to go downstairs to sit...it's more interesting.

Favorite Dish: Everything we had was great....I can't recommend any one thing.

Da Francesco: Dining with the locals

THIS was my favorite restaurant! Da Francesco.
It's a trattoria that's very popular with the locals. You sit with other people wherever you can find enough seats for your party...it's definitely informal and noisy, but the food and experience is worth it! It is also very busy and if you don't go early, you will have to wait in line outside for a seat. (By early, I mean around 8:30 (20:30).

Favorite Dish: That's impossible...everything was delicious.

We ate in so many wonderful restaurants and little osterias. This is another good one in the Spanish Steps area--Al Vantaggio.
Prices were average for Rome, nice atmosphere.

    Favorite Dish: Great pasta dishes--duh!

A Roman Deli: Porchetta---food of the gods!

  • Restaurant Name: A Roman Deli

I had porchetta in a restaurant in Rome for lunch, but do you think I can remember the name of the place?? Of course not! BUT, do not despair.....I am SURE that any of the small meat markets or deli shops in the city will have porchetta. So, go order some porchetta, some rolls or that delicious crispy flat bread (what is the name of it?) and get yourself some wine...take all back to your room and have a picnic.

Favorite Dish: PORCHETTA!! I just found a recipe for making it, here are the ingredients:
    6 tablespoons salt
    1 tablespoon pepper
    5 cloves garlic, finely minced
    4 tablespoons minced shallots
1 cup finely chopped fresh chives
    1/2 cup chopped rosemary
    1 cup olive oil
1 (6 to 8 pound) boned fresh ham
2 cups white wine, for basting
You flatten the ham and spread the herbs all over the inside, roll it up and bake until thoroughly cooked.....basting with wine at regular intervals. The final product is yummy!!
