Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is the oldest game reserve in Africa. It was the ancient hunting ground of the Zulu kings who protected the area by proclaiming conservation laws, long before anything formal was in existence. The park covers an estimated 96 000 hectares, and encompasses three reserves: Hluhluwe, Umfolozi - two of Africa's oldest game reserves, both founded in 1895 - and the associated Corridor Reserve, proclaimed in 1989
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi is internationally renowned for its Rhino conservation project. “Operation Rhino” during the 1950-1960’s was responsible for saving the White Rhino from the brink of extinction. The reserve is also almost entirely responsible for re-populating rhinos into many of the reserves throughout Southern Africa.
A self-drive game reserve, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi also offers wilderness trails, self-guided walks, daily game ranger walks, night and day drives.
The reserve offers a wide range of accommodation: tented safaris, rustic chalets, budget rondavels, luxury lodges and getting back to the basic: bushcamps!
I love this game reserve. I suppose it helps that it is only a two and half hour drive away from Durban, so close enough for a weekend get-away! There is something marvellous about Hluhluwe-Umfolozi…for a small moment in time, you get to suspend the hustle and bustle of city life, sit back, take a deep breath, unwind, and let Africa soothe your soul.
- Pros:Exhilarating!
- Cons:Not seeing that blasted leopard in a tree!
- In a nutshell:Love it - just love it!

Wonderful page Laura, I enjoyed reading it a lot! And thanks for all the tips: we'll be visiting Hluhluwe this October and I can hardly wait to go here! :-)
Hi Laura, excellent Hluhluwe page. We liked this park a lot (we have been there in March2006). We were even extremely lucky to see a leopard (though only for a short time).
Thanks for the Rhino lesson! Fabulous page Laura, is there more to come!? p.s. Nice bum ; )
