Getting TO/AROUND: This airport is lovely. It is a thatched building situated in an open plain. It is a lovely sight to see and one of my favourite smells in the world: that of a thatched roof! When you go inside the airport that’s just what you smell: bliss! It always reminds me of childhood holidays spent in the parks in and around KZN. The staff were super efficient and we were able to check in long before our flight. There is not much in the way of entertainment – a small coffee shop upstairs that is comfortable and serves good tasting coffee. We were able to sit outside on the grass too after checking in…there are not many airports where you can do that… There is only one flight a day from Durban to Mpumalanga airport, and that is around mid-day. I do advise booking well in advance to make sure you get a seat.

Getting TO/AROUND: Kruger Park has been designed as a self-drive game park, therefore, to get the most out of your game park experience, I would advise driving/hiring a car when visiting. As we live in South Africa, we haven't yet had a need to hire a car while on our visits to the park. However, that is not the case for everyone, and I have found a very informative link on the official website for Kruger National Park, describing the kind of cars available to hire and how to go about it.

Getting TO/AROUND: Don’t underestimate the amount of time it will take you to exit the park on your last day. The gates of the park close at different times in the summer and winter. Don’t be late! On one occasion, many years ago, we took a wrong turn and got lost…by the time we arrived at the exit gate, they were closed for the evening. The gates are locked by the game ranger, so we had to wait while he was called at his residence and then wait while he drove all the way to the camp gates to unlock them and let us out. He was not best pleased! Below are the opening and closing times of the main gates into Kruger and of the camps. I got this information from the official Kruger Park website. The link to which is on my Kruger home page. Kruger Park Gates open: Nov-Jan: 05:30 Feb: 05:30 Mar & Oct: 05:30 Apr: 06:00 May-July: 06:00 Aug-Sept: 06:00 Camp Gates Open:Nov-Jan: 04:30 Feb: 05:30 Mar & Oct: 05:30 Apr: 06:00 May-July: 06:00 Aug-Sept: 06:00 Park and Camp Gates Close: Nov-Jan: 18:30 Feb: 18:30 Mar & Oct: 18:00 Apr: 17:30 May-July: 17:30 Aug-Sept: 18:00

Getting TO/AROUND: Before entering the park, you will need to pay an entrance fee at the gate, in addition to this, your details and those of your car (registration) will be taken. It is a good time to buy a cold drink, snack at this point if you haven’t already brought some along. It could be a few hours before you reach your camp. You will be able to buy a route map from the reception point, which is vital for your trip around the park. This will help you plan which areas of the park you which to visit during your stay. Your car will also be checked – the boot and inside – for any illegal items, poaching equipment etc. This will also happen on your way out.
