My wonderful year in Lille!

Crowned the European Capital of Culture 2004

This event sure did put Lille on the map! At only 1h40 mins train ride on the Eurostar from Waterloo it really does feel like you're just taking a short trip to another UK town...until you arrive at the terminal! Cobbled streets, loads of shops, quiant boutiques and plenty to eat! Make sure you always look a few paces ahead when you are walking as Lille tends to have a it of a problem with dog mess as with the streets of Paris. Fantastically cheap for a a spontaneous weekend away - hoards of foreign tourists flocked to Lille during this period and as an ERASMUS student there I got to benefit from the weekly events for the whole year long.

My best parts of Lille would have to be the Citadelle which is a star shaped park - its sooo big it contains a zoo which attracts plenty of tourists to the monkey inclosure - they have their own island and mess around to get the onlookers atttention - so funny!

I also loved the streets surrounding rue Solferino which is one of the two areas for nigth life - Highlander pub is friendly as well as Latina Caf? which has the latest up to date music of a latino and rnb european mix. Along rue solf?rino you will find an array of restaurants including greek, pizza and chinese - chinese restaurants make up most of the restaurants in this area actually!

Another thing to do every Sunday morning is the fantastic Wazemme market which is located off rue Leon Gambetta a major road that cuts through the centre of Lille. Make sure you get to the market by then time it closes usually around 1pm or 2 latest. Nearer the end you will get the amazing bargains as the perishable goods are sold off at knock down prices! Olives, roast chicken fresh garden vegetables, sweets and biscuits of every kind! Kids clothing, lingerie, belts and scarfs, pippy long stockings in winter too! Make-up and other cosmetics of well -known brands is available at knock down prices - you won't be disappointed!

If you want to ask me anything about Lille don't hesitate as I've seen plenty of it including the surrounding areas such as Lomme. I'd be happy to help.
