Dieppe for the day - OK! Dieppe overnight - Not on a Sunday night!

Dieppe is a place of staggering banality. The Dieppe market is on a Saturday and probably the livliest event in the town. On Sunday the pubs and restaurants shut early. On Monday some of the shops and eateries open some of the time, and others not at all.

There is not much to do in the town, only visit a couple of Eglises and the Chateau-Musee. You can climb up to the cliff tops on either side of the town - to the grounds of the Chateau Musee to the West and up to the Chappelle Notre Dame Bonsecours to the East - a shrine to sailors lost at sea. These give lovely views of the harbour and sea.

The beach itself is featureless and uninteresting with substantial pebbles. See picture. A swimming pool complex is due to open next year and this will improve the offering by about 500%. Inland there are bland lawns fronted by ungraceful buildings. There are dogs and dog *** everywhere - owners are not required to clean up after their animals.

The one sporting facility that I can recommend is the 18 hole putt putt course, which is good fun.

If I visited again I would enquire about busses and trains out of the town and try to visit somewhere more interesting. Either that or I would go on a very long cliff top walk.

Beware the ferry time table. The ferry there took 3 hours. On the way back it managed to take 5 hours, exceeding its pupblished ETA by nearly an hour.
