"France's Premier University Town" Montpellier by mikey_e

Montpéllier was one of the stops along that whirlwind tour of Southern France, Spain and Portugal that my father and I completed in 1998. We read that Montpéllier was a large university town - one that most closely followed the American university town tradition out of all French cities. From what I remember, the city was quite pretty, but I had other fish to fry. As a university town, Montpéllier was filled with bookstores and I was busy rummaging through the sale bins outside of every other shop in the city centre, searching for something, anything that might have to do with the Occitanisme movement and the true language of France south of the Midi, Occitan. I didn't really find anything to satisfy my thirst, but I did have a lot of fun.
