Cambodia

So much more than Angkor.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat.
Although Angkor Wat and the other temples around are probably the jewel of the country, there is so much more behind. Most of us only know about these temples and a bit about the civil war but get out and meet the people and you'll find they are some of the most friendly and happiest you could wish to meet. There is a saying that to get on with the Cambodians, or Khmers, you have to make them laugh. Without acting the clown this is how I managed and it's true, make 'em laugh and they WILL laugh with you!! One small point : Never, ever promise to buy something from the kids and not actually do it, just because you're a bit fed up with touts and hawkers. Selling their bits and pieces is the only way they have of earning a few pence. I'm sorry for some, that the descriptions of the sights of Angkor are rather succint, but I do tend to get overdosed quickly, be it temples or museums, and as I've already said I much prefer being with the people.

Most of my tips and photos have now been moved to their appropriate city pages. Ie : Siem reap (Angkor), Battambang and Phnom Penh.
Proof!!!!

Giggles near Battambang.

This little girl couldn't stop giggling and almost fell off her bike when she saw half a dozen europeans walking about in her small village near Battambang. She did recover quickly and gratified us with one of the biggest smiles of our 10 days in Cambodia.

On the road near Siem Reap.

I came across this family preparing the paddy field for rice early one morning. As you can see, even the young girls participate.
Hard at it!!
