The village, formerly named Vaucluse, from "Vallis Clausa" or closed valley gave its name to the departmrnt on creation in 1791. Only 8 kms from L'Isle sur la Sorgue, Fontaine de Vaucluse is famous for its source, source of the river Sorgue. This source or fountain is the collecting point and the only outlet from 1100 km2 of underground springs coming from as far as the Mont Ventoux. Plus the water that passes through the crevices of the 230 metre high limestone rock, it must make for a superb spectacle during the Spring run-off. Unfortunately in late Summer it is very difficult to see the reservoir that generally bubbles up to the same height as the wooden fence, although there is plenty of water running down the hillside. The source has been plumbed at -308 metres. The force of the water here prompted local businessmen to create paper mills along the banks, only being surpassed by elecrticity in the middle of the 20th c. The last mill closed in 1968.
